Narratives and Advertising

‘…we dream in narrative, day-dream in narrative, remember, anticipate, gossip, learn, hate and love by narrative’ (After Virtue, 1985: 211).

The construction of the narrative is a transformative act. It brings various impulses and potentialities into a peculiar order. It makes us aware of differing points of reference and invites us to scrutinize what is being presented at face value. In a way, narratives count on our sense of curiosity. Without this, there would be no story to tell.

The best thing I learnt at Uni last semester… It will stay with me for a long time.

Nicholas Teo

Nicholas is a fellow creative and a talented singer (which I only found out today!). We both teach at Swinburne and I just came across this on facebook, and just wanted to share it with you. Checkout Nicholas’ site on tumblr.

“To approach experience, however, is not like approaching a house. ‘Life’, as the Russian proverb says, ‘is not a walk across an open field’. Experience is indivisible and continuous, at least within a single lifetime and perhaps over many lifetimes. I never have the impression that my experience is entirely my own, and it often seems to me that it precedes me. Experience folds upon itself, refers backwards and forwards to itself through the referents of hope and fear. And so the act of approaching a given moment of experience involves both a scrutiny (closeness) and the capacity to connect (distance). Finally, if one is fortunate, meaning is the fruit of this intimacy.”

This is an extract from the introduction to Pig Earth by John Berger really resonated with me. All I can say is wow!

Food for thought…

Makes me think. If you can do it legally, and you are on the right team… then you can do anything.

Apologizing does not always mean that you're wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationship more than your ego - Anon

Love this quote… :-)

Photoshoot with Colin from Mia Mia Gallery

Had a fantastic photoshoot with the help of Lynette Zeeng at Swinburne University today. I am working on a project for Colin McKinnon-Dodd from Mia Mia Gallery and we were able to shoot some great photos. I have shared a few of these photos and once I finish the project you will be able to see it at the portfolio section of this site. Hopefully, now that the shoot is done, the rest of the project can power ahead. Will blog the projects as they are completed. Big Thanks to Lynette. :-)

Abstracted: Crowdsourcing

This presentation was put together as part of a performance for my User Centred Design Research subject at Swinburne University in early 2010. I used the structure of Science Fiction to delve into my Research Topic: “How can crowdsourcing be used by the babyboomer to benefit community projects?”. Through this presentation I loosely examined the personas and concept model of utilising crowdsourcing to benefit community projects.
